Institute of Solid State Physics celebrates its 45th anniversary

On February 24, the ISSP UL celebrated its 45th anniversary. Many notable and honorable guests, including the Minister of Education and Science of Latvia, Anda Čakša, attended the event.

The speech of the ISSP UL’s Director, Dr. Phys Andris Anspoks, opened the festive event. He said that, unfortunately, the Institute’s anniversary day coincides with a day not associated with joy since last year’s beginning of war in Ukraine. The director invited guests gathered in the institute’s hall to honor the war’s victims with a minute of silence and nevertheless rejoice on this day - so that peace would return to the world sooner.

In her speech, the Minister of Education and Science, A. Čakša, greeted the ISSP UL director and the entire institute’s family, wishing them new achievements in the years to come. The Minister also noted that the ISSP UL implements international programs and has earned high evaluations during the international science assessment, which confirms the international competitiveness of the Institute.

At the event, enthusiastic and inspiring festive speeches were also given by representatives of the Ministry of Economics, the Latvian Council of Science, the Latvian Academy of Sciences and other state, non-state, and private organizations, expressing appreciation for the institute’s contribution to the field of material sciences and thanking its researchers for putting Latvia’s name on the world map of scientific achievements.

The anniversary was an event filled with positive emotions. The former directors of the ISSP UL and researchers of the institute received special certificates of honor for their scientific achievements and contribution to the development and recognition of the ISSP UL.

The ISSP UL is an internationally recognized leader in material sciences and interdisciplinary research in the Baltic Sea region. It is one of Latvia’s oldest physics research centers, and since its foundation, it has changed with the times. The ISSP UL plays an important role in developing Latvia’s material sciences and technologies field. Its excellent and advanced research has led to the development of several innovative materials and technologies that have the potential to revolutionize several industries, including electronics, energy, and medicine. Institute’s scientific competitiveness and the research and innovation ecosystem are currently being improved within the scope of the CAMART2 project.
